And much like a bar or club at three in the morning, online daters look a lot better in the dark and without the overhead lights turned on.
Why do people lie? What are some of the most common lies a man will make to a woman on the Internet?
Height is one of the top lies out there. One dating web site did a chart of men who touted their height as one measurement but in fact, they were on average two inches shorter. The chart was hilarious! Think about it, when walking down the street, how many men are actually six feet tall? Yet, on Internet dating sites it seems most men are giants. They seem to think they are.
Another lie is the job. When a man is unemployed, most often than not he will list his job as something else and something very general. A “consultant” is a loose term for just about anything. We are all consultants in the real world. Just last night, a woman at the pharmacy asked me if I liked the shampoo I had in my cart. I told her that I did and that it added a lot of moisture for curly hair. She smiled and bought a bottle herself. I was a hair consultant at that moment.
A third and more serious lie? Married or unmarried. You do not want to meet a married man who is lying about his wife and kids at home. Need I say more about the topic?
Some men also lie about their education. I don’t think it’s because they want to appear more intellectual with the on line dating community but perhaps it is because some men prefer to remain private until the relationship becomes more serious. Google is a dangerous place and doing a university search for that man in the cool profile is a bit of detective work that a man might not warrant. Were he to lie about his schooling and the fact he was a Nittany Lion as opposed to a Bobcat, is most likely his way of remaining safe from a distance and valuing his privacy. On line dating is a public place, after all.
A safe lie is where a man will say he lives. Again, for the same reason above, he might want to remain discreet until the relationship reaches a different level. Some feel there is no harm in saying a hometown is Pittsburgh when in fact it is Harrisburg or Philadelphia. It makes sense. Safety first when conversing with strangers on an online dating site.
Money is the final lie. Men like to make more money than they actually do. Sadly, some women are interested in paper and coins than they are in what the man has to say. Those are the wrong women to attract but that decision is best left up to the profiler maker and not she who answers it. Once a lie is made about money, however, the man will find it difficult keeping up with the expenses of dinners and gifts if the woman truly believes he is related to a Hearst, a Johnson or a Spelling.
Lies might seem like tiny fibs when told on the Internet. The truth however, hurts. In the long run the only person who suffers from all of the stretching and back peddling is you.
